Child Brides in Afghanistan. A Slide Show.

If you’ve seen the iconic photograph above, you’ve seen Stephanie Sinclair’s work without knowing it. In 2003, she travelled around rural Afghanistan, photographing child brides and documenting the horrific abuses they have experienced. Some of these girls attempt to kill themselves. Others set themselves on fire. Few run away. Listen to Stephanie’s audio commentary surrounding her harrowing work. Yesterday I shared with you the story of pederasty in Afghanistan. Today it is child brides.

On her website, you can find more photos and stories about polygamy in Africa, self-immolation, and Muchturan Mai, the Pakistani woman who dared to charge her gang rapists instead of committing suicide like she was expected to.
