Letter writer Masud Sheikh, in the Globe today…Mr. Sheikh’s argument is apparently that criticism of the terrorist murderers who had just killed 56 Londoners was “morally unacceptable,” and that only when we can regard them as the same “class of citizen” as ourselves, will we have a peaceful future. Sounds like the peace of the grave to me, frankly. But hey: as the General pointed out at the time, it’s a free country.
The “scumbags” are in the middle of the post.

With reference to my letter in the Globe & Mail, my objection was not to Hillier calling the London bombers scumbags, but following that up with asking Canadians to be ready for battle and killings (and soldiers being killed) when Canada went into Kandahar later that year. He was acting like a mirror image of international jihadists.
The complete sentence (most of which was truncated) by the editor was: Rick Hillier made his famous “scumbag” comments at the time of the subway bombings in London, showing identification with people of another country with whom he shared race, religion and ethnicity; in response, Hillier wanted Canadians to kill “scumbags” in Afghanistan.
Also, the earlier sentence about dual class of citizenhship related to people that Canada has abandoned in foreign countries, if they happen to be brown-skinned & Muslim
