Québécois: What a bloody, upsucking House of Commons

From Paul, this time at SDA:

We live in a time where the entire legislative branch of government, including the CPC, censures a free press provider for telling the truth:

“That this House, while recognizing the importance of vigorous debate on subjects of public interest, expresses its profound sadness at the prejudice displayed and the stereotypes employed by Maclean’s magazine to denigrate Quebec nation, its history and its institutions.”

The Maclean’s article is here; this is the cover that corrupted a whole house of Parliament:

The amazing thing is all those devoted federalist MPs cravenly falling over themselves to placate a bunch who, my dear, frankly don’t give a damn:

Between the RoC and the hard place

While buying votes in Quebec the cons are losing votes elsewhere. Good luck to them.

Gawd can it be any clearer, the Conservative Party is infested with Progressives there’s no one left to vote for.

If MacLeans had slammed Alberta do you think they would have presented such a motion?

Must be nice to live in Quebec and be considered to be more important to the country’s existance than anyone else.

    No choice, people. None.

I’ve said this elsewhere, but I can see that it bears repeating: with the Liberals and NDP eagerly sucking up to Quebec by supporting this motion, it would have been political SUICIDE for the government to oppose it. If only the opposition parties weren’t trying to exploit this for political gain, it might have been a different story…but as it stands, the government was forced into supporting this. I hate it just as much as anyone else…but my disgust is directed at the Liberals and NDP who are actually responsible for this.

(the Bloc I expect nothing from anyway)

Ah yes, the old “it’s all THEIR fault”. And here I thought conservatives believe people should take responsibility for their own actions.

No matter how you swing this one Fred, the MP’s have to be responsible for their own votes on this. Just like they have to be on every other vote.

Besides, Harper is sucking wind in Quebec. Do you really think this vote is going to bring his numbers up?

The Conservatives should have entered a counter-motion condemning Maclean’s for not having as its theme “Which province is more corrupt, Ontario or Quebec?” So actually it is Ontario that is the sacred cow since with its E Health scandal and green energy single source billion dollar contracts it gets a pass.

Easy to get unanimous consent when there is only half of the house there and the people who disagree get up and walk out.

UPDATED AGAIN: MPs did, in fact, vote on this late Wednesday night. Bloc MP Pierre Paquette rose at the end of a series of other votes and, as Prime Minister Stephen Harper and many other MPs was leaving, asked for “unanimous consent” of the House to adopt his motion. He read the motion and MPs on all sides of the House (which was about half full at that point) rose to applaud. When the applause died down, independent MP Andre Arthur hollered “Non!”. Paquette hollered something back at him — as did many other MPs — and Arthur left the chamber. Paquette asked again for “unanimous consent” and, receiving it at that point, the following motion was passed.

And it wasn’t a recorded vote, just a holler out yeah or nah.
    So who voted (hollered) ?

Absolutely. The Liberals and NDP should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to exploit this situation at the risk of further damaging national unity. A truly DISGUSTING display of selfishness and irresponsibility on the part of both Ignatieff and Layton, frankly.

No matter how you swing this one Fred, the MP’s have to be responsible for their own votes on this. Just like they have to be on every other vote.

I don’t need to ‘swing’ this one at all, Gayle. What…you think Prime Minister Harper should have stood up and denounced Quebecers as being overly sensitive? Yeah, you would have LOVED that, wouldn’t you?

Sorry, Gayle…there is no traction for you on this issue. None. In fact, that argument was so lame that it’s not even worth an obligatory “nice try”, I’m afraid. It was just pitiful.

Besides, Harper is sucking wind in Quebec. Do you really think this vote is going to bring his numbers up?

Not at all. But at least the government took one look at your oh-so-obvious attempt at laying a trap for them and stepped right around it, thereby denying you any political gain from it. The fact that you failed so miserably makes us happy, if nothing else…;)
