A CBC headline reads: Afghan detainees committee to hear from ex-envoy
No such “Afghan detainees committee” exists, and it never has. What exists is the “Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan”, and the purpose of its creation was to visit Afghanistan and report on what’s happening in the country to Parliament, and make recommendations to the House of Commons.
Instead, it has been hijacked by the opposition to listen to one aspect of the mission, and a rather unimportant one at that. As such, neither our Parliament nor our people seem to know anything about what’s happening in Afghanistan, short of the allegation that people get tortured. Nor do they know what Canada’s future role there, if any, will be.
I think this link pretty much sums up the failure of the “Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan” to do any actual studying of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan.
UPDATE
The CBC has conspicuously changed the headline and the content to “Afghan translator alleges shooting coverup.” I wonder if they read this blog, or they finally got an editor on the case.

Another one for you:
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2010/04/06/taliban-support-poll.html
Most other MSM outlets made it clear in their headlines the poll results were about a year old – funny how that didn’t happen here.
Maybe the CBC has some apprentice headline writers in its internet newsroom?
I think the CBC has shoddy reporting on Afghanistan in a general sense, perhaps with the exception of Brian Stewart. But even he wrote a kind of whingy article about how media aren’t allowed to write about the fact that the Taliban shell KAF.

Hm, some vaguely familiar names there.
I suppose we should expect completely unbiased reporting from this committee, some of whose members wouldn’t say anything positive about the Conservatives if Stephen Harper founds a cure for cancer.
Another good reason not to trust the MSM is CTVs reporting that the story involving Jaffer and Guergis revolves around an illegal drug operation. If the people involved didn’t know that the RCMP investigation had nothing to do with lobbying they sure do now. Let’s alert the bad guys so they can cover their tracks. Way to go you bunch of scumbags!!!
You are very correct, the commitee is not doing what it is supposed to do. It has been hijacked for partisan reasons.
Maybe this is why the British call a minority a hung parliament,
the opps always gang up to hang the government…..NOTHING gets done.
Unfortunately, our soldiers are going to be the ones that get hung. All for Liberal/ NDP partisan gain.
CBC makes my skin crawl, what goes around comes around Karma sucks. CBC will one day be shut down and I’ll dance in the streets on that day.
Evan Soloman, Terry Milewski celebrating with opposition the wonderful words heard at the committee today. Terry Milewski tells Evan that the opposition were hoping to only damage the government but oh well … now the military will be smeared also.
I am one of the majority of Canadians who is concerned about our Canadian soldiers. CBC is wondering why only 3 percent care of fate of Taliban in Afghan Jails. But Terry Milewski hoping these latest relevations will lead Canadians to condemn Government and charge Canadian soldiers with war crimes.
CBC working hard to discredit our military 24 hours a day!
Disgusting!!!!
We need Fox in Canada.
The CBC has become a national disgrace.
just watched some of the committee hearings and was shocked to see Amir Attaran sitting beside this Afghan translator. Coaching him to answer in certain ways. I could hear Iggy’s pal from Harvard whispering answers for this man to repeat all the way through.
Attaran and Iggy working hard to slander and smear of brave Canadian soldiers.
Why aren’t the Conservatives changing the channel every time the Afghan detainee issue comes up?
Why aren’t they answering back with a brief outline of the mandate of the “Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan” and a question as to the status of their report on what our role might be in Afghanistan after 2011.
It should be a stock answer used by all party members in whatever forum they happen to be in whenever the Afghan detainee issue is up for discussion.
Question: “When did you first hear of the mistreatment of Taliban prisoners in Afghan jails?”
Answer: “Funny you should mention that. I was just thinking about the Special Committee on the Canadian Mission in Afghanistan and how their mandate was to determine our role in Afghanistan beyond 2011 and how the committee has been derailed by the detainee story. People are starting to ask what our future role will be and this committee is failing to live up to its mandate which was to present us with an analysis of the situation and suggestions for going forward.”
Can you imagine a whole day where everyone gives the same answer?
The MSM would be outraged, Iggy would frown, form an ‘O’ with his forefinger and thumb and give a lecture.
Canadians would likely give a collective nod in agreement with the stock government answer. I think we’re all sick to death of this subject.
This committee has to be taken to task for concentrating solely on the detainee issue for the glory of smearing the goverment and, by extension, our military.
Our future role in Afghanistan demands immediate attention.
“The Media Can’t Be Trusted To Cover Afghanistan”
Oh please, this manipulative, biased jerks can’t be trusted period.
Not sure what your point is John. Everyone has a bias, but the media tries to pretend that it does not. The media, all, try to present themselves as fair and balanced, but then they produce dreck they try and pass off as news.
When you drop in a blog, you know the bias, it is not hidden. No one trying to pretend to be fair and balanced at all.
Like my old History professor told us about second source material, “Learn about your source author to find their bias, and then take that into consideration when you read their material.”
CBC news has degenerated into a very expensive political gossip show with a large dash of celebrity watching/stalking. It’s not actually NEWS.
